Madeline Adkins

 

Madeline Adkins was appointed to the position of Associate Concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra by Maestro Yuri Temirkanov in 2005.  She joined the orchestra in 2000 as Assistant Concertmaster.  She has appeared frequently as soloist with the BSO, performing works by Beethoven, Vaughan Williams, Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Prokofiev.  Most recently she was featured as the soloist and leader for a conductor-less program of Vivaldi, Handel, Bach and Carlo Farina.  Ms. Adkins also performs as Concertmaster of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra.

She has served as guest concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, and the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, as well as concertmaster of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa.  Ms. Adkins won first prize in a number of competitions, including the Stulberg International String Competition, the ASTA National Solo Competition, and the New England Conservatory Concerto Competition.  She was also a second prize winner in the Irving Klein International String Competition.  Since 1989, Ms. Adkins has been active in early music, having performed baroque violin with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, the Dallas Bach Society, and currently with Pro Musica Rara of Baltimore.

The daughter of noted musicologists, Ms. Adkins is the youngest of eight children including four violinists, two cellists, and a soprano.  The siblings, who include titled players in the National, Dallas, and Houston Symphonies, join together to perform several times a year as the Adkins String Ensemble.  Ms. Adkins received her Bachelor’s summa cum laude from the University of North Texas and her Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory where she studied with James Buswell.


Angela Lee, a native of Korea, began studying violin at the age of 7 in Carrara School of Music in Carrara, Italy, where her father served at the Carrara Art School as a visiting professor.

Ms. Lee earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2007 from the Seoul National University in Korea and later that year moved to the United States to attend the Manhattan School of Music where she earned her Master of Music degree and Professional Studies Certificate in Orchestral Performance Program. Her primary teachers were Glenn Dicterow, Concertmaster of New York Philharmonic and Lisa Kim, Associate Principal Second Violin of New York Philharmonic.

She has maintained an active performing career in New York as a substitute player in the New York Philharmonic and the New Jersey Symphony. She was also a principal member of the New York-based Philharmonic Orchestra of Americas (POA). Ms. Lee was a visiting artist of National Symphony of the Dominican Republic led by French pianist and conductor Philippe Entremont.

Prior to her post with the Baltimore Symphony, she completed her fellowship with the New World Symphony, having often served as one of the rotating concertmasters, working under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas.

She has participated in numerous music festivals including Verbier Music Festival in Switzerland and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. She has also participated in Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival’s Russian/American tour.

Ms. Lee joined the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in September, 2012, as Assistant Principal Second Violin.

Violist Karin Brown received critical acclaim for her “strikingly rich and warm tone” (The Strad) after making her solo recital debut at Weill Recital Hall. Ms. Brown is a violist in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and performs frequently as a solo and chamber musician in the Baltimore/Washington area. She made her Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concerto debut performing the Britten Double Concerto with Concertmaster Jonathan Carney, of which The Baltimore Sun noted “Karin Brown sculpted her phrases in a rich, subtly shaded tone.”  She will make her Chicago recital debut with radio broadcast at the Dame Myra Hess series in 2008.

Ms. Brown has been a prizewinner in numerous competitions, including the William Primrose International Viola Competition and the National Federation of Music Clubs Competition. She has been featured in Caramoor’s “Rising Stars” series, and has attended festivals at Tanglewood, Pacific Music Festival, and Verbier. In addition, she has performed at New York Viola Society Concerts, and gives master classes and recitals across the country. An advocate for new music, she has performed several premieres, and strives to program music by women composers, lesser known masterworks, and American music. While still a student at Juilliard, Ms. Brown was a frequent substitute with the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera, joining each for several international tours. She received her Bachelor’s d egree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her Master’s degree from the Juilliard School, where she was a recipient of the Nathan Gordon Memorial Viola Award. Ms. Brown has studied with Cynthia Phelps, Roland and Almita Vamos, Samuel Rhodes, and Zoya Leybin. A committed teacher, she has served on the faculty of the Killington Music Festival, and maintains a private studio of violin and viola students. Her students have been accepted to Oberlin, Eastman, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Peabody.

Pei Lu

Cellist Pei Lu is the recipient of many awards and honors including a top prize in the National Cello Competition in China and the Gregor Piatigorsky Award from the Peabody Conservatory of Music.  She has performed in Europe, Asia and throughout the United States.  She also toured in the Middle East, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and China with Apple Hill Chamber Players.

A native of China, Ms. Lu began her musical education at the Xian Conservatory of Music. Upon her arrival to the United States, Ms. Lu was honored with full scholarship  to study with world renown cellist, Professor Stephen Kates.  She completed her studies with the most prestigious Artist Diploma in Cello Performance at the Peabody Conservatory of Music.
